Secrets of the Museum, BBC2, review: A satisfying showcase of world class talent

This docuseries goes behind the scenes at the V&A, giving an insight into the meticulous that work goes into caring for even the tiniest of treasured objects

Anyone who remembers the infamous "e;Monkey Christ"e; incident of 2012 - when a well-intentioned elderly Spanish woman unsuccessfully attempted to restore a 1930s fresco - will understand that there is a true art to conservation. The BBC's Secrets of the Museum is all about celebrating that art.

Its second series returns to London's Victoria and Albert Museum, peeking behind locked doors to reveal just how much meticulous work goes into caring for even the tiniest of treasured objects.

The eclecticism of the V&A's collections make it the perfect subject. In the first episode alone, if the metallic red Glam Rock suit of Slade's Jim Lea didn't take your fancy, there was a Renaissance watercolour by Jacob Jordaens in need of rescuing, a stunning kimono exhibition that must be readied for a world tour and a rare Michelangelo wax model being unearthed from cold storage.

This is gentle viewing and comforting to watch, safe in the knowledge that these people know exactly what they're doing, with moments of tension extending to a wobbly trolley ride for said Michelangelo model back to the galleries (although if you find being in a china shop stressful, this will push all your anxiety buttons).

There was rather a dearth of non-white voices, no doubt a reflection of the lack of diversity across the wider museum sector, but the specialists featured were impressively skilled, in particular textile conservator Jo Hackett, whose painstaking precision needlework was astonishing.

In a time when some have become sceptical of experts, this was a thoroughly satisfying showcase for world class expertise.
