Description : In recent years, the indie singer-songwriter Mitski has found her largest audience yet. Her seventh studio album, 2023's The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, spawned a massive viral hit, the lovely "e;My Love Mine All Mine."e; Late last year, she released a concert film theatrically and recorded a cover of Pete Townshend's "e;Let My Love Open the Door"e; for the 2025 film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Nothing's About to Happen to Me continues Mitski's bold steps forward, with lush, orchestrated songs that veer between tranquil beauty and unsettled noise. "e;That White Cat"e; boasts clanging guitar reminiscent of Sonic Youth and droning chant vocals, while "e;Where's My Phone?"e; is a gleeful, grungy single with bashing drums and funhouse-mirror vocal melodies. In contrast, the gentle, folk-leaning "e;Instead of Here"e; sways like a summer's breeze, and flute and sentimental strings float through the jazzy confection "e;I'll Change For You."e; "e;Rules,"e; meanwhile, sounds like Mitski conducting a jaunty marching band overflowing with horns, woodwinds and organ. These sonic twists and turns capture the turbulence of Nothing's About to Happen to Me's lyrics, which describe the inner life of a protagonist who prefers to stay at home with her messy life and thoughts (and two cats). When she does venture out, a wild side emerges that causes additional stress. This duality understandably causes tension and confusion, both to the protagonist and everyone else in her life. She's plagued by thoughts of death and dying as she grapples with loss and the painful disconnect between fantasy and reality. On "e;I'll Change For You,"e; Mitski pleads "e;I'll do anything/ For you to love me again/ If you don't like me now/ I will change for you"e; while the uncompromising "e;Dead Women"e; muses about the phenomenon of people being more valuable after they die: "e;While I dream of flying, stab me twenty-seven times/ Ransack the house/ For what you'll auction, what you'll keep."e; As Nothing's About to Happen to Me progresses, it's increasingly unclear whether her reclusive behavior is by choice or a byproduct of some previous trauma: "e;I just want my mind to be a clear glass/Clear glass with nothing instead"e; ("e;Where's My Phone"e;).  These surreal thoughts come to a head during the moody, album-closing dirge "e;Lightning."e; During one section, guitars rage like a storm as Mitski articulates the delicate conflicting emotions: "e;If I'm dark/ All the better/ To reflect the moonlight/ If I mourn/ All the better/ To behold the sunrise."e; The song retreats into tranquil introspection driven by languid riffs and elegiac strings: "e;I can hear the song of my death/ Singing for the lightning to come."e; It's an uneasy resolution that suits a disquieting album  that underscores Mitski's limitless artistic ambition. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz
