A very entertaining spoof of Tod Browning&s Dracula. I&d recommend this low budget porn film over Paul Morrissey&s version. Jamie Gillis does an excellent portrayal of Dracula, giving superb homage to Bela Lugosi, “Children of the night, what music they make”. Richard Bulik has Renfield&s insane laugh down, “My cries at night, they might disturb Miss Mina.” Even the fake flapping bat on a string is perfect. Reggie Nalder plays an excellent Dr. Van Helsing, and the music score, largely classical, is well chosen. Periodically an intercom interjects with odd comments, “Dr. Silver report to room 22 for a lobotomy”.

Apparently a few scenes involving urination have been cut, but be prepared for incest scenes between John Leslie and ‘sister& Kay Parker, as well as a necrophilia scene with Mike Ranger and the ‘undead& Serena. These are all played tongue in cheek, and work well within the context of the film. Seka has a brief, but luminous, appearance. John Holmes, whose acting is limited to his impressive endowment, has two scenes. Annette Haven is lovely as always, Serena is superbly sexy, and John Leslie is the suave lead. Apparently filmed at Scotties Castle in Death Valley.

Highly recommended.

The shorter Lust At First Bite runs 74 minutes, and contains alternate footage different from the original version of the film. The single most surprising thing about this ambitious and lavishly mounted X-rated take on Bram Stoker's popular tale of legendary vampire Count Dracula is that it works a lot better as a fairly faithful porn remake of the 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi than one might expect. Director Phillip Marshak offers a flavorsome evocation of the period setting, makes excellent use of an actual sprawling castle, and manages to generate a reasonable amount of spooky atmosphere. The sincere script by Darryl Marshak and David Kern for the most part treats the premise in a relatively serious manner, but still adds a welcome element of self-parodying humor. The bang-up cast of tip-top Golden Age adult cinema heavyweights helps a whole lot: A bearded Jamie Gillis portrays Dracula with great aplomb and assurance, a positively ravishing Annette Haven projects an achingly pure and fragile quality as the virginal Mina, and Serena simply sizzles as the brash Lucy, plus there are sound contributions from Paul Thomas as the effeminate and sexually frustrated Jonathan Harker, John Leslie as worried sanitarium supervisor Dr. Arthur Seward, Kay Parker as Arthur's loyal and concerned sister Dr. Sybil Seward, John Holmes as the lusty Dr. John Stoker, Seka as the sassy Nurse Betty Lawson and William Margold as sarcastic hipster asylum orderly Henry. Richard Bulik has a field day with his juicy role as the unhinged Renfield while Reggie Nalder keeps his dignity and exudes a properly authoritative presence as formidable vampire expert Van Helsing. Hanania Baer's pretty cinematography boasts several funky stylistic flourishes. Lionel Thomas's elegant score provides a real sense of class.

INFO ON BOTH VERSIONS:

Suffering from insomnia and nightmares since his father disappeared while selling a castle in Transylvania, Renfield (Richard Bulik) is brought by his aunt Irene (Pat Manning) to the desert castle clinic of Dr. Arthur Seward (John Leslie) and his British sister Sybil (Kay Parker). His father's voice beckons him to nearby Carfax Abbey to remove the stake from the remains of Count Dracula (Jamie Gillis) who makes him his slave. The count visits the institution and charms Seward's virginal niece Mina (Annette Haven) and her slutty college friend Lucy (Serena); much to the annoyance of their respective fiancés Jonathan Harker (Paul Thomas) and clinic intern Peter Bradley (Mike Ranger). Dracula puts the bite on Lucy (on the toilet), but it is not her death that has Seward summoning college Dr. Van Helsing (Reggie Nalder); rather, many of his patients sporting similar bites have reverting to almost cannibalistic sexual behavior. Although Van Helsing holds the belief that most of the world's ills are caused by constipation and recommends warm water enemas, he determines from blood tests on Renfield and Lucy that the cause here is vampirism. As more fall victim to Dracula and his fanged minions – including John Holmes and Seka as a doctor and nurse – Van Helsing must convince Seward and Harker of Dracula's evil before he can claim Mina as his bride. Predating John Badham's Dracula with Frank Langella but not the 1977 Broadway run, Dracula Sucks  is uneven in tone but impresses on a number of levels. In terms of style and production value, the film is on par with some of the more ambitious low budget horror films from the period thanks hugely to the time-consuming camera set-ups by cinematographer Hanania Baer, the Castle Hill location, reasonably convincing if not always consistent period costumes and props, and decent to good performances. Although the script goes for cheap jokes more often than not, it is truly informed by the source material as well as other Dracula films and horror movies in general with Bulik's full-on Dwight Frye imitation and David Lee Bynum's fearful and superstitious black chauffeur channeling Mantan Moreland. The vampire attacks that are almost Yorga-like in their ferocity and their creepy dentition (including vampirized maid Irene Best literally chomping on Holmes' member and the would-be staking of Lucy that turns into an fully-realized act of necrophilia). Gillis himself is at times a bit too cavalier in his Lugosi caricature. Nalder, a well-known horror film actor, is slumming but gets by on authoritative screen presence as one of the most ineffectual Van Helsings on screen. Marshak reportedly had high hopes for this film as a mainstream pornographic work. As such, it is not really a stroke film in that the sex scenes do not follow the usual formula and most linger just long enough to get across who's doing who (with the more drawn out sex scenes being the ones that culminate in a biting). Some watersports footage that is seen in flash-forward optical silhouettes is missing from the subsequent scene (although there is evidence of it in the aftermath), but that appears to have been an editing decision since it is also missing from the more explicit Lust At First Bite version. Norman Thaddeus Vane  is credited as second unit director while Gillis, Leslie and Marshak's son Darryl are listed with third unit direction. Production manager Bruce Markoe is now post-production executive for Marvel Studios. Stunts are credited to "e;I. Broke Leg"e;.

Apart from some scratches at the reel changes and a quite a bit of damage over a shot of Holmes late in the film, the progressive, anamorphic 1.78:1 transfer looks great for an archival 35mm element of an unreleased cut. Colors are bold and the image is sharp with only minor edge enhancement. The Dolby Digital 1.0 mono track is fairly clean with all dialogue intelligible and the music undistorted. Co-star/co-writer/assistant director William Margold dishes all the dirt on an audio commentary moderated by Joel Rudin. He describes how he got involved with Marshak as a writer on Lust Flight 2000 (as well as some unproduced projects), Marshak's obsession with Bela Lugosi, and how Margold was tasked with scripting additional scenes and characters for the people Marshak randomly brought on. Margold also describes Bulik as having been genuinely crazy, refers to Thomas as Haven's protector and the production's cocaine supplier, suckering Leslie into doing an incest scene (with his character's sibling), but is outspoken in his affection for Gillis and Serena, Best, Parker, and his discovery Ranger. Although he admires the cast, he concedes that they are not at their best (and are in fact trying to upstage each other most of the time). He also speaks of the filmmakers' ambitions to do something big with the movie and how cocaine killed the energy. He points out the scenes he directed (as well as suggesting that Holmes might have directed a scene) and reacts to the absence of scenes or shots or their presence in the wrong place. Rudin mentions that it is the first cut of the film, and that while this version was never released theatrically, it appears to be the most coherently cut. He explains that he chose it because it contains all of the sex scenes (if only in part) and all of the deaths (which are mostly missing from the alternate cut), but that also there seems to be no full cut of the film.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Overall:  This was truly a great movie.  I'd seen it many, many years
ago as my introduction to adult films, and so when I ordered it from
Excalibur I wasn't sure whether I'd get a good movie or a
disappointment.  But I can honestly say that I was surprised,
pleasantly, by this movie, by its excellent and often humorous plot and
its good production values, as well as by the scorching sex which comes
in every flavour--from lovemaking to rape to necrophilia to incest to a
mental patient who thinks she is, and dresses like she is, eight years
old.  Not that it's a regular kink-fest, but let's just say that the sex
is interesting--and the stars are the best: Annette Haven and Seka are
enough for me anyday, but it has a host of others.  Now, there are two
places where there have definitely been edits from the original version,
but I think these are relatively minor considering all that's untouched,
and all that's untouched is proof enough that these are probably the
only segments which were cut.  The two segments are scenes where Dracula
urinates on first Seka and then a nurse--the pissing itself is removed,
but we can clearly see the aftermath when the cuts are over.  There
may be a third cut, in scene 5--I'm not sure, but I'm thinking there
may have been since there is a bit too much plot material here, and
there is a good opportunity presented for a scene with Renfield,
Dracula, and the maid, which just doesn't happen; I don't know.
However, since there's so much rape and little-girl-themed sex left, and
even necrophilia, I doubt anything else has been touched--at least in
the copy I just bought from Excalibur, which was manufactured sometime
before 1995 since the "e;made before 1995"e; statement isn't there.  It's
also a very funny film--the constant announcements over the sanatarium's
intercom about enamas, escapees, and other things are just hilarious.
But anyway, it is a fantastic example of Golden Age cinema, and
extremely entertaining, and I unashamedly rate it 3.75 on the Imperial
Scale.

1)  Dracula introduces his tongue to Annette Haven's lovely pussy as
sensuous music plays in the background, and Annette begins to suck him
off when a voice begins addressing us and asks, "e;Where does reality
start and dream stop?"e;  [Short intro sequence, finished at the end of
the film.]

2)  Plot scenes at the sanatarium where Renfield is being held and where
guests have just arrived, several non-sex segments, then the orderly
goes to check on a female patient and rapes her doggy as she yells "e;No,
no! please, no!"e; and looks, at first, in pain.  The orderly eats an
apply while he's raping her, tosses it in the air a few times, says
things like "e;How you like them apples, bitch!"e;--and then crushes the
apple in his hand and smears it into her back as he cums on her
asscheek.

3)  Guests are shown through the mental ward, and "e;Baby Jane"e; is pointed
out--"e;In here, she's eight years old."e;  She's also dressed in a girlie,
lacey white dress with pink ribbons and bows in her hair, really looks
the part, and is blowing a cowboy.  She gets doggied to the 1812
Overture, and this scene, though brief, is beautiful, and her facial
expressions as she leans over the saddle and gets ridden are simply
darling.  The doctor mentions that all the patients seem to have lesions
of an odd sort...

4)  "e;Lucy"e; is walking with her fiance outside, and they talk about how
much they love each other.  Awww.  :-)  Then she gives him an open-air
BJ while inside "e;Mina"e; (Annette Haven) and a black guy sing "e;Swing Low,
Sweet Chariot"e;--a strangely sexy, funny song to play in such a
situation.  Then Bolero kicks in for the remainder of the BJ, but
unfortunately she jerks him off at the end.  Darn.

5)  "e;Professor von Helsing"e;--yes, we all know the story--suggests that a
vampire is causing the lesions.  Then, in Renfield's dungeon cell,
Dracula appears to the tune of "e;Thus Spake Zarathustra."e;  More plot
scenes culminating in Dracula and two female vamps coming out of coffins
that night to "e;Pomp and Circumstance"e;--the blonde one grabs some guy,
blows him, fucks him cowgirl, and all the time makes comments like "e;Make
that goddamned thing bigger!  200 years I've waited and this is all I
get!"e;  It's makes me want to bust a gut as well as a nut...

6)  Dracula visits the evening staff party and they talk as the maid is
eaten out on a pool table by John Holmes.  She gets fucked doggy on the
pool table, then mish--and she has HUGE nipples; normal breasts, normal
areolas, but huge nipples.  The scene is finished later, in 7.

7)  As Lucy takes a pee on the toilet, Dracula comes in and puts her
under his spell--here, a scene of him pissing on her chest is cut, but
just after that we see the results on her face, neck, and the yellow
clingy nightgown which her rips from her chest.  He then jerks off on
her, some into her mouth, and leaves her there with a bloody bite-mark
on her breast.  A silly scene since he only jerked off, but it's part of
the plot as we see later, and probably would have been more arousing
with the peeing intact.  Oh well--but not a big loss, because now we get
back to Holmes fucking the maid.  More mish, then cocksucking to the
tune of "e;The Beautiful Blue Danube"e;--climaxing with a beautifully messy
facial all over her, with more sucking after he cums.

8)  A bat flies around, then we see Dracula kissing a sleeping Annette
Haven.  The next day she feels "e;drained,"e; and the chauffer finds Lucy in
a coffin in the basement and comes screaming back like the black
chauffers in old Abbot & Costello movies did.  Her fiance is dispatched
to put a stake through her heart, but can't do it before he fucks her
one last time.  Brief mish in the coffin as "e;Swing Low, Sweet Chariot"e;
is repeated, and he flashes back to the BJ he had earlier, then he cums
on her belly.  Professor von Helsing and the others examine her body,
noting the bite on her breast.

9)  Haven breaks it off with her fiance, and he goes outside and runs
into a blonde nurse.  They talk about it, he says "e;Can you imagine what
it was like to be engaged to a virgin for three years?"e;--and she
comforts him by blowing him in the back of a 1930s sedan, RC, doggy,
chauffer peeks in through the window.  No cumshot.  Just then--

10)  Baby Jane escapes, and a female vamp calls "e;Oh Baby Jane!  Come
here..."e;  lesbian scene on lawn as the blonde vamp-girl eats Baby Jane
out and plays with her pussy.

11)  The sanatarium owner watches from his office, and complains to his
sister that they're going to lose everything they've worked for.  She
looks kind of like Rita Rudner, only prettier.  She quiets him by
stripping for him, blowing him, letting him screw her doggy and then cum
on her tits, all the time talking dirty about their incest.

12)  The Count comes over that night, and goes with the nurse to give
blood for Haven's transfusion.  As they leave, he mesmerizes her, strips
her, lays her flat on the table, then we have another pissing scene
clipped and see the urine all over her chest as Dracula jerks off all
over her, making animal dog-like growls the whole time, as before.

13)  More plot scenes as Dracula is finally revealed to be a vampire.
Another blonde nurse visits John Holmes, cuffed to a bed, who recounts
how the maid bit him and shows us the bite marks on his penis.  She has
compassion and lets him loose, and then for her kindness is forced down
and stripped.  Holmes eats her out--quite literally--as she struggles,
and when he fucks her mish blood trickles down her belly from her
pussy.  Then he rapes her doggy as she looks in pain--I would be too if
someone were fucking me after biting my gentials--then makes her suck
him off, with another monster facial to end it.

14)  Annette Haven and her ex-fiance are outside at night talking as von
Helsing and Dracula argue inside.  Then we see a bat fly out of the
window and mesmerize Haven--the ex-fiance seizes the opportunity to hike
