Plot Summary:
Set in a time when love and sexuality were often considered taboo,"A Woman's Torment" explores the struggles of a well-to-do couple, Don and Frances, whose marriage is strained by the presence of Frances's mentally ill sister, Karen. Living with them, Karen has become mute and increasingly burdensome to their relationship. The couple seeks advice from their psychologist friend Otis and his dissatisfied wife, Estelle, regarding the possibility of committing Karen to an asylum.

In a moment of desperation, Karen escapes to an abandoned beach house on Fire Island, where she experiences a series of disturbing sexual encounters. These experiences exacerbate her mental turmoil, ultimately leading to violent outbursts as the voices in her head compel her to act out. The film chronicles the impact of these events on the lives of the characters involved.
