Almost the best thing about the film Masseuse is its main theme music. The music, composed by one Michaelangelo, is stunningly good, and would be worthy of the pen of Enrico Morricone or Nino Rota. The titillatingly uplifting melody of the opening credits sets the viewer in such a lyrical mood that one would think not of vagina, but of Valhalla.
Is this a good thing for a porn film? It's a serious question.
At first glance, it may not be entirely understandable that director Paul Thomas is drawn to a story about how one slightly dorky "e;informal"e; erotomaniac fell in love with a woman from a massage parlour, and as a result, nothing worked out between them. The plot is weak in the factual part, and sins logical inconsistencies. However, as we know, in the hands of a genius, even a phone book is a plot for drama.
Is Paul Thomas a genius? Another serious question.
Due to its specific nature, pornographic fiction does not use complex psychological plots. The characters in it are most often "e;archetypes"e; - that is, characters with clear characteristics. In this it is similar to all other genre film vids - action films, comics, horror films. In them, the main task of the characters is to move and move the plot, not to reveal their complex psychology. Among the genre "e;archetypes"e; there are their icons - Spider-Man is on a par with Cicciolina, the lecherous nymphet with a bear on her lap.
Paul Thomas, a "e;pioneer pioneer"e; as he is known in the porn world, was attracted to the masseuse storyline precisely because it was of the psychological kind. Thomas wanted to try to make a drama - or melodrama - based on porn cinema. That is, to be both titillating and heartwarming.
It's hard to say whether that's even a feasible task. "e;The greats"e; were only approaching it - like Buñuel in "e;Daytime Beauty"e; and "e;The Vague Object of Desire"e;, or Bertolucci in "e;Last Tango"e;. The current "e;film hooligans"e; - Catherine Breillat or Michael Winterbottom - did not answer this question clearly either.
Alas, Paul Thomas can only be praised for his persistence. He had little success with 1990's "e;Masseuse"e;; but 2004's "e;Jenna Jameson Is Masseuse"e; leaves a very contradictory impression.
By and large, one could say that the film is so-so. There are no vivid, stunning erotic scenes. No vivid plot. There is no depth of psychological revelations, no stunning shamelessness, appreciated in porn. This film is like a dance party "e;for those over 30"e;. Everything is dignified and sad.
And yet the film is curious, and leads to various thoughts - though not related to the work of director Thomas.
It's better to start with the minor ones, in order to move on to the major ones.
Quite unexpectedly as a marvellous comedic supporting actor Evan Stone showed himself. This guy has spent most of his life portraying pithy character lovers on screen. His sweet face with a dimple on his chin, and long thick hair was always so luscious that Philip Kirkorov just rests.
And suddenly in "e;The Masseuse"e; it became clear how accurately Evan Stone can play a simpleton. Everything, like a puzzle, fell into place - Evan had a real acting charm, Stone's character could be in any decent mainstream film, and take a very winning place there. Yes, Hollywood could have gotten a very good comedic actor. But that one, alas, fell victim to his own ironclad erection.
And here, finally, is the highlight: Jenna Jameson. A person's uncommonness is often expressed in their versatility. She danced well, posed for photos well, fucked on screen very well, went into business - where better. Thanks to "e;Masseuse"e; we learnt that she also plays well. How well - it is difficult to determine, because to play in a film by Paul Thomas, as Faina Ranevskaya would say, is like swimming butterfly in the toilet. I mean, there's nowhere to turn. But the fact that Jenna played a serious role truthfully, looked on the screen organically, and was a head above the other actors - it's a fact. She was the only one who was able to extend her dramatic role to the sex scenes in this film.
There was, however, in her performance one important nuance, which strongly planted the already not very strong plot of the film. Jenna Jameson did not look like a masseuse. Hypatia Lee in the previous version looked like one, but Jenna did not. Moreover, Jenna looked neither like a prostitute, nor a lonely housewife, nor a secret lesbian. She didn't look like anyone in this mundane world at all. She looked like herself, Jenna Jameson, a porn star in her thirties. And she played - very expressively and truthfully - herself and her love for her husband. It was hardly in the plans of director Paul Thomas, but just this (and also a great musical theme) is the most valuable thing in the film, which causes real emotions in the viewer and the desire to think about the meaning of life.
So the film "e;Jenna Jameson Is Masseuse"e; is only about Jenna Jameson's big personality - and nothing else.
And one other small observation, in passing.
Looking at Jenna and her husband Jay, who plays the main character, two thoughts come to mind.
One: she loves him a lot. At least at the time of the film.
Two: he's no match for her. She's an order of magnitude bigger than him as a creative person, and, it seems, as a person in general. For a woman's love, perhaps that's not much of a hindrance. For male love, it's a serious problem.
